Purpose
- Rutile duplex electrode 22Cr-9Ni-3Mo-N (AWS E2209-17) — welding duplex stainless steel 2205/1.4462 and dissimilar joints with carbon or low-alloy steel.
Why it works
The controlled balance of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen produces a balanced ferritic-austenitic microstructure (~50/50), combining strength well above a conventional austenitic stainless with good resistance to pitting and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Fields of application
- Duplex steel 1.4462/2205 and equivalents; chemical and petrochemical plants, desalination, pulp and paper, offshore structures.
- Dissimilar joints between duplex and carbon/low-alloy steel.

Equivalence refers to the classification (AWS / EN ISO), not to product identity. In applications with a qualified procedure (WPS), validate the substitution before use.

Advantages
- Mechanical strength well above conventional austenitic stainless, with good toughness.
- Good resistance to pitting and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
- Rutile coating: easy arc handling, usable in all positions except vertical-down.
Limitations
- The ferrite/austenite phase balance is sensitive to heat input — requires interpass temperature control to avoid losing toughness or corrosion resistance.
- Risk of sigma-phase and 475°C embrittlement under sustained exposure in the 300–1000°C range — not suited to continuous service in that range.
- The high ferrite content limits toughness at cryogenic temperatures — not a duplex for very-low-temperature service.
