Purpose
- Basic duplex electrode 22Cr-9Ni-3Mo-N (AWS E2209-15) — welding duplex stainless steel 2205/1.4462 and dissimilar joints where higher toughness than the rutile version is required.
Why it works
Same base alloy as FERVEO DPX 2209 R, in a basic coating: lower diffusible hydrogen and higher ductility in the deposit (A5 30% vs 20% for the rutile version), at the cost of a more demanding arc and DC-only operation.
Fields of application
- Duplex steel 1.4462/2205 and equivalents; chemical and petrochemical plants, desalination, pulp and paper, offshore structures.
- Dissimilar joints between duplex and carbon/low-alloy steel where joint toughness is critical.

Advantages
- Higher ductility than the rutile version (FERVEO DPX 2209 R) — preferable when joint toughness is critical.
- Lower diffusible hydrogen in the deposit — reduces cold-cracking risk on thicker or more restrained steel.
- Good resistance to pitting and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Limitations
- A more demanding arc than the rutile version (FERVEO DPX 2209 R) — requires more welder skill.
- The ferrite/austenite phase balance is sensitive to heat input — requires interpass temperature control.
- Risk of sigma-phase and 475°C embrittlement under sustained exposure in the 300–1000°C range — not suited to continuous service in that range.
