Purpose
- Duplex solid wire 23Cr-8.5Ni-3Mo-N (AWS ER2209) — joining ferritic-austenitic duplex stainless steel and dissimilar joints, for service from -10°C to +250°C.
Why it works
Alloyed nitrogen stabilizes the austenitic phase during the weld pool's rapid cooling, helping maintain the ~50/50 ferrite/austenite balance characteristic of duplex, with good resistance to pitting and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
Fields of application
- Duplex steel 1.4347, 1.4417, 1.4460, 1.4462, 1.4582 and equivalents.
- Service from -10°C to +250°C; chemical plants, desalination, offshore structures.

Equivalence refers to the classification (AWS / EN ISO), not to product identity. In applications with a qualified procedure (WPS), validate the substitution before use.

Advantages
- Good resistance to pitting and chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
- Mechanical strength well above a conventional austenitic wire.
- Defined service range (-10°C to +250°C) backed by the manufacturer.
Limitations
- The ferrite/austenite phase balance is sensitive to heat input — requires interpass temperature control to avoid losing toughness or corrosion resistance.
- Risk of sigma-phase and 475°C embrittlement under sustained exposure in the 300–1000°C range — not suited to continuous service in that range, nor outside the manufacturer's -10°C to +250°C service range.
