Purpose

  • Self-shielded flux-cored wire (open arc) of 14% Mn austenitic steel: not hard as-welded (170–200 HB), but work-hardens in service under impact up to ~500 HB.

Why it works

The weld metal is austenitic manganese: it deposits soft and machinable, and gains hardness (work-hardening) under repeated impact in service. That is why its place is impact wear, not pure abrasion. Open arc: welds without gas, useful in the field.

Fields of application

  • Crushers, cones and mantles, hammers and jaws of trituration equipment made of 14% Mn (Hadfield) steel.
  • Buffer layers and build-up on manganese steels.

Base metals

Flux cored wire contains 14% Mn; weld metal microstructure is austenitic, therefore has excellent impact resistance

Advantages

  • Excellent impact resistance — work-hardens in service.
  • No gas needed — open arc, field-ready.
  • Ideal base for wear-facing over manganese steel.

Limitations

  • Does not develop its hardness without impact: not the choice for pure abrasion without pounding.
  • Machinable only by grinding once hardened.
