Purpose

  • Nickel-iron cored stick electrode (AWS E NiFe-CI, EN ISO E C NiFe CI 1) — joining grey and malleable cast iron, and joining cast iron to hard-to-weld steels.

Why it works

The iron added to the nickel raises the deposit's mechanical strength versus FON Ni, at the cost of a somewhat harder heat-affected zone — chosen when the joint must carry more load than pure nickel allows, especially joining cast iron to hard-to-weld steel.

Advantages

  • Higher mechanical strength than FON Ni — the better choice when the joint must carry more load.
  • Suited to joining cast iron with hard-to-weld steels.

Limitations

  • Requires specific technique: short beads and gently peening each pass with a hammer while still hot — skipping this greatly increases cracking risk.
  • Less machinable deposit with a harder heat-affected zone than FON Ni — if maximum crack tolerance is the priority, FON Ni is the better choice.
