Classification

Purpose

  • Al-Mg (3% Mg) solid TIG rod for joining aluminum-magnesium alloys, especially parts intended for anodizing.
  • Moderate Mg content — good finish after anodizing, unlike this datasheet's Al-Si rods.

Why it works

Magnesium (3%) instead of silicon gives a deposit that anodizes to a uniform tone close to the base metal — the reason it's chosen specifically for parts where the anodized finish matters, something the Al-Si rods (ALU 4043/4047) can't offer.

Fields of application

  • Joining aluminum-magnesium alloys (DIN 3.3206, 3.3315, 3.3525 and equivalents).
  • Parts intended for anodizing where a uniform finish tone matters.

Equivalence refers to the classification (AWS / EN ISO), not to product identity. In applications with a qualified procedure (WPS), validate the substitution before use.

Advantages

  • Anodizes to a uniform tone, unlike this datasheet's Al-Si rods.
  • Higher ductility (A5 20%) than ALU 4043/4047.

Limitations

  • Lower mechanical strength (Rm 200 MPa) than ALU 5356 or ALU 5183 — not this datasheet's highest-strength structural option.
  • Moderate Mg (3%) — doesn't provide the highest strength in this datasheet's Al-Mg family, see ALU 5356/5183/5087 for that.
