Purpose

  • Al-Si (5% Si) TIG rod for joining and filling aluminum-silicon casting alloys, up to 7% Si.
  • Good weld-pool fluidity — favors fill in castings.

Why it works

Silicon (5%) narrows the solidification range and improves weld-pool fluidity compared to a pure-aluminum filler, reducing porosity and the hot cracking typical of welding cast parts — this is why it's the reference filler for joining Al-Si casting alloys, not for general structural use.

Fields of application

  • Joining and filling aluminum-silicon casting alloys up to 7% Si.
  • Preheating to 150°C recommended on parts thicker than 15 mm.

Equivalence refers to the classification (AWS / EN ISO), not to product identity. In applications with a qualified procedure (WPS), validate the substitution before use.

Advantages

  • Good fluidity — reduces porosity and hot cracking in castings.
  • Higher hot-cracking resistance than a pure-aluminum filler.

Limitations

  • With Si content, the weld doesn't anodize to the same tone as the base metal — not recommended when an anodized finish is an aesthetic requirement.
  • Lower ductility (A5 15%) than this datasheet's Al-Mg alloys — not the first choice for demanding structural use.
