Purpose
- Alloyed Ti-6Al-4V titanium TIG rod (AWS ER Ti 5) — welding high-strength titanium alloys (3.7161, 3.7164, 3.7165 / LT31).
Why it works
Aluminum (5.9%) and vanadium (4%) form a high-strength alpha-beta alloy — more than double the tensile strength of pure titanium (FERVEO TIT 2), at the cost of lower ductility and greater sensitivity to oxygen/nitrogen/hydrogen contamination during welding.

Advantages
- The highest mechanical strength in the FERVEO TIT family (Rm ≈890 MPa) — more than double that of pure titanium.
- The aerospace-reference alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) — extensive structural service history.
Limitations
- Titanium reacts with atmospheric oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen above ~500°C — beyond the torch shielding gas, it requires additional trailing and backing gas coverage on the root and the hot zone behind the weld pool; a bead that turns yellow, blue, or grey indicates contamination and toughness loss.
- Lower ductility than pure titanium (10% versus 20% for FERVEO TIT 2) — more sensitive to contamination embrittlement, so gas shielding discipline matters even more.
