Classification

Material no. (W.-Nr.)2.4806
Other standardsISO 20172: Gruppe 8.1

Purpose

  • Solid Ni-Cr-Fe rod (alloy 82) for joining NiCr alloys, heat-resisting austenitic steels and dissimilar-metal welds.
  • Service from -196°C to +550°C continuous; scale resistant to 1000°C.

Why it works

The Ni-Cr base with niobium addition (Nb ~2.5%) stabilizes the deposit against chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone, avoiding the intergranular sensitization typical of welding nickel alloys — hence its preferred use in dissimilar joints where base metal composition changes across the weld.

Fields of application

  • Joining NiCr alloys (2.4816/2.4817, Inconel 600 type) and heat-resisting austenitic steels.
  • Dissimilar-metal welding: stainless to carbon steel or to nickel alloys, in high-temperature process equipment.

Advantages

  • Very wide service range: -196°C to +550°C continuous, scale resistant to 1000°C.
  • Low carbon content (0.02%) — reduces carbide precipitation risk in the HAZ.

Limitations

  • Not an alloy for concentrated-acid service — see NIC 625 or NIC 276 for that duty.
