Material no. (W.-Nr.)1.4547

Purpose

  • Super-austenitic Cr-Ni-Mo-N 20/18/6 solid wire, high molybdenum and nitrogen — very high resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion, designed for seawater service.

Why it works

The high molybdenum content (6.3%) directly drives superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in halide-containing media (seawater); added nitrogen also raises mechanical strength above most standard austenitic grades. The manufacturer itself notes that, due to its stable austenitic structure, it can be somewhat more sensitive to hot cracking — recommends using the lowest heat input possible.

Fields of application

  • DIN 1.4547 (254 SMO-type super-austenitic stainless steel); chemical industry; seawater desalination plants.

Advantages

  • Very high pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in seawater.
  • Higher mechanical strength than most standard austenitic grades, thanks to nitrogen.
  • Good stress-corrosion resistance.

Limitations

  • Stable austenitic structure with some hot-cracking sensitivity — use the lowest heat input possible.
