Classification

Purpose

  • Al-Mg (5% Mg) solid TIG rod for general structural use, the most common in the Al-Mg family.
  • Service from -196°C — suitable for cryogenic applications.

Why it works

The elevated magnesium (5%) gives the highest mechanical strength among this datasheet's standard Al-Mg rods (Rm 250 MPa) while keeping good ductility (A5 25%) — the reference combination for general welded aluminum structure, unless service is at sustained elevated temperature.

Fields of application

  • General structural joining of aluminum-magnesium alloys (DIN 3.2315, 3.3206, 3.3210 and equivalents).
  • Cryogenic applications — documented service from -196°C.

Advantages

  • Best strength-ductility combination among this datasheet's standard Al-Mg rods.
  • Suitable for cryogenic service down to -196°C.

Limitations

  • Maximum documented service 100°C — rods with Mg >3% (like this one) aren't recommended for sustained elevated temperature due to sensitization risk (loss of intergranular corrosion resistance).
  • Doesn't provide ALU 5183's higher strength if the application demands more structural load capacity.
