Purpose
- Al-Mg-Mn solid TIG rod with zirconium (Zr) for joining aluminum-magnesium alloys and aluminum castings.
- Zr is added specifically to improve hot-cracking resistance.
Why it works
Zirconium (0.2%) refines the grain in the deposit, specifically reducing hot cracking during solidification — an issue more present in high-strength Al-Mg alloys than in less-alloyed ones, and the manufacturer's documented reason for adding Zr to this specific composition.
Fields of application
- Joining aluminum-magnesium alloys (DIN 3.2315, 3.3206, 3.3210 and equivalents).
- Aluminum castings where hot cracking is a greater risk.

Equivalence refers to the classification (AWS / EN ISO), not to product identity. In applications with a qualified procedure (WPS), validate the substitution before use.

Advantages
- Higher hot-cracking resistance than ALU 5356/5183, thanks to the Zr.
- Mechanical strength comparable to ALU 5183 (Rm 300 MPa).
Limitations
- With 4.5% Mg, the same sensitization risk at sustained elevated temperature as ALU 5183 — no maximum service temperature is documented in the supplier datasheet to confirm the exact limit.
- Ductility (A5 20%) same as ALU 5183, lower than ALU 5356.
